Bedford Hazmat Incident

November 20, 2019 19:30 – Bedford, TX – After pulling over a DUI suspect, a Bedford police officer had a reaction to an unknown substance while searching the suspect’s car. A fellow officer asked dispatch to send EMS to check him out, believing the substance might be fentanyl or some other extremely potent drug.

Medic 154 responded along with Chief 154 and Battalion 15, who requested an engine and Hazmat to investigate. North Richland Hills Fire responded with Battalion 22, Hazmat 22 and Quint 225, and Roanoke with Hazmat 66. The Hazmat units are resources shared by the Northeast Fire Department Association(NEFDA). Battalion 22, Hazmat 22 and Quint 225 arrived and two hazmat techs suited up to investigate and isolate the suspected substance, while Bedford police and fire kept a safe perimeter. After further assessment, Hazmat 66 was canceled. The techs located the substance, attempted to ID it(still unknown to me), bagged it, and turned it over to Bedford police. The techs were decontaminated, and fire units cleared the scene for police to finish up the stop. The condition of the officer affected is unknown. I believe he was probably evaluated and released. If I hear otherwise, I’ll update this post.
